ARTIST PROFILE

LAWRENCE TORTO

Growing up in the art studio surrounded by the beauty of immense Art masterpiece by my Dad, the late “Williams Sodja Torto” (Carlos), I developed  massive skills and enthusiasm for Art and started drawing at age 5 because I always worked next to my Dad in the studio. Apparently I’m  Art Blooded. [Born Artist]
I am a Ghanaian Contemporary visual Artist,  a resident in Accra.
I  majored in Art at the Vision Art College in Accra-Ghana where I specialized in Painting and designing and graduated with a Diploma certificate in Visual Art in 2011.
I describe myself as a versatile Artist, I basically specialize in Abstracts & Textile Art.

To me, Art is Therapeutic, it improves my creativity and increases my visual intelligence and equilibrium and heals me both physically and spiritually.

My work is deeply influenced by my Ghanaian culture, black history and most of all our current era trends of Fashion.
I love fashion, and I believe when Art and fashion merges Magic happens, hence the need to adopt these two into my Practice to erupt that dynamic chemistry.

Working with discarded fabrics and acrylics on canvas, I spontaneously upcycle their beautiful layers in a Predetermined experiment not only to create art, but to bring to life images, Portraits & figuratives that communicates to observers, captivates the soul, appealing to the eyes & stimulates the minds.

I am a member of the Ghana Association of visual Artists (GAVA) currently the vice Secretary.

Over the years I have Exhibited Enormously, from Solo shows to enormous Group Exhibitions and my works have been Collected all over the world.

STATEMENT.

As an Artist and an environmentalist, I believe it's our due obligation to protect the environment from Pollution and environmental hazards, etc.
In a form of using my creativity to advocate for environmental justice, I'm inspired to get creative with waste fabrics and waste kente wax prints I gather or collect from neighboring sewing shops in my community, I have quite a number of relatives and friends who are fashion designers, so I basically go to them to collect the wasted fabrics, instead of discarding them, I rather upcycle them to produce beautiful pieces of Art that communicates to my observers, captivates and stimulates their minds.
My Art is deeply influenced by fashion,
I'm a lover of fashion, and I believe when Art and fashion merges magic happens, hence the need to combine these two to erupt that dynamic chemistry.

I firmly believe that art possesses the transformative power to confront the pressing environmental crisis we face today.
In this exploration, I embark on a journey that celebrates the remarkable fusion of art and sustainability, weaving together cultural richness and intellectual curiosity to forge a path towards a greener and more enlightened future.
Join me as I delve into the transformative potential of using Art as a driving force in the pursuit of environmental harmony.
